Kampala Talks on Burundi: Western nations and armed insurgents demand regime change

KPFA Weekend News, 12.26.2015.

Talks aimed at ending the conflict in the East African nation of Burundi will begin in Kampala, Uganda on December 28th. The US, the EU and Burundi’s armed insurgency have all insisted that Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza step down. They say that his third term violated the 2000 Arusha peace agreement, which said that no president would serve more than two terms. The Arusha agreement, they say, is more important than the Burundian constitutional court's ruling that the constitution allowed Nkurunziza to be elected one more time.

Agence France Presse reports that President Nkurunziza is enormously popular among Burundi's rural majority, but the US, EU and armed insurgents in the country's capital continue to demand that he step down.
